“Aren’t mum’s brill!?”

“Aren’t mum’s brill!?”

Sunday, 15th March 2015 marks ‘Mother’s Day’. Not just my mother’s day but everyone’s Mother’s Day!

This is a day where we in the UK dedicate a day of the year to celebrate all that our mothers (and grandmother(s)) have done for us! In the UK people will usually buy their mother a Mother’s Day card and buy her a gift such as flowers or chocolate or simply spend some time with her throughout the day.

Mother’s Day as a modern day celebration originated in the early 20th century with the idea of honouring one’s own mother, as well as motherhood and the influence of mothers in society (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day). Mother’s Day apparently originated in North America with it being celebrated all over the world today usually in the months of March or May!

Do you celebrate Mother’s Day in your home country? If so, what traditional things might you get involved with?

For a lot of our international students it is likely that your mother is not in the UK with you but that doesn’t mean that you cannot still let her know how much she means to you. Here are some ideas of what you can do for her:
  1. ·         Give her a telephone call/Skype or an email/text message to tell her that you are thinking about her;
  2. ·         Buy her a small gift (such as a piece of jewellery) and have it posted it to her as a surprise;
  3. ·         Take a photograph of yourself doing something special for her or just something to remind her of you or to show her how much you are missing her and post it or email it to her;
  4. ·         Buy her a personalised card using ‘Moonpig’ (https://www.moonpig.com/uk/) or make her a card yourself (for the creative ones of you!) and post it to her with a little message inside;
  5. ·         Go online and buy her an e- card using a website like ‘Blue Mountain’ (http://www.bluemountain.com/ecards/birthday/mother/classic) and email it to her;
  6. ·         Contact your father (or another family member) and arrange for some flowers to be sent/given to her.

If your mother is in the UK with you and you want to spend some time with her then why not visit http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/whats-on/family-kids-news/mothers-day-2015-go-what-8719377 for some ideas? We all have a lot to be grateful to our mothers for; after all, none of us would be here if it wasn’t for out mother!

Let us know what your plans are for Mother’s Day or for those of you who do not have any plans why not share with us the nicest thing that your mother has done for you in the past?
